Clinical Genomics Scientist

Position summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Genomics Scientist with a background in genetic counseling to join our clinical genetics laboratory team. This person will play a pivotal role in advancing our molecular diagnostics capabilities, focusing on next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. They will contribute to the development and validation of sequencing workflows, assist with research and development (R&D) initiatives, and develop client-facing materials supporting NGS technologies. They will support the interpretation and curation of genetic variants, work closely with our customer care team, and respond to client inquiries about NGS testing. The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment, working alongside laboratory directors, genetic counselors, software developers, and customer support staff to deliver accurate and timely diagnostic results for patients with genetic disorders. While the majority of this role will interface directly with our R&D department, there is a customer support element, so excellent customer service skills will be required to succeed in the role.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • NGS Development and Implementation: Assist in the development, validation, and implementation of NGS assays for use in the clinical laboratory. This includes NGS data review, optimizing protocols, and process improvements.
  • Variant Curation: Curate and classify variants using ACMG/AMP guidelines for sequence variant interpretation. Maintain accurate documentation in variant databases and contribute to ongoing updates of curation processes to reflect evolving scientific knowledge.
  • Case Review: Perform preliminary review and analysis of genetic cases, including variant prioritization, literature review, and integration of clinical data prior to final sign-off by the laboratory director. Identify potential discrepancies, recommend additional testing, and prepare comprehensive case summaries.
  • Data Interpretation and Reporting: Analyze NGS data to interpret genetic findings in the context of patient phenotypes. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to generate clear, actionable reports for clinicians and patients.
  • Patient Support and Client Interaction: Work closely with the customer care team to address client inquiries regarding NGS testing. Assist in communicating complex genetic findings in an accessible manner.
  • Creation and Upkeep of Documents and Materials: Develop and maintain client-facing documents, including test requisition forms and patient consent materials, ensuring clarity, compliance, and alignment with laboratory protocols. Create and update marketing materials to promote NGS testing services and educate clients.
  • Research and Development (R&D): Contribute to R&D initiatives, including evaluating new genomic technologies, participating in research projects, and supporting the development of novel diagnostic approaches. Assist with data analysis and preparation of findings for internal use or publication.

Requirements

  • Education: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling (or equivalent) with board certification or eligibility. This role will be required to obtain Washington State licensure, but it is not a prerequisite.
  • Experience: At least 1-2 years of experience in NGS data interpretation in a clinical or diagnostic setting. Demonstrated proficiency in applying ACMG guidelines for variant classification.
  • Skills: Strong analytical skills with expertise in genetic variant databases (e.g., ClinVar, gnomAD) and interpretation tools. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients, patients, and interdisciplinary teams. Ability to develop clear, user-friendly documentation and marketing materials. Ability to work in a fast-paced, regulated environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Desired experience: Experience with NGS data analysis tools. Prior involvement in NGS assay validation. Experience in creating or managing clinical documentation, marketing materials, or billing processes.
